Why Teeth Whitening?
Your teeth will become dull, stained or otherwise discolored over time. This may occur due to a variety of factors, including but not limited to:
- The natural aging process
- Poor oral hygiene
- Foods and drinks which stain (tea, wine, coffee, soda, mustard, barbeque sauce, berries, etc.)
- Use of tobacco products, including smoking
- Illness
- Use of certain medications, such as tetracycline
- Fluorosis (excessive fluoride consumption, especially in children)
Teeth whitening, or bleaching, works to break up and lighten stains and discolorations on the tooth enamel and give you a smile that is whiter and brighter. This type of cosmetic treatment is one of the fastest and most effective ways to improve the appearance of your teeth. Please remember that teeth whitening is not permanent. While your results may last for some time, you will occasionally need to have your teeth “touched up” in order to maintain a bright, white smile.
Professional vs. Over-the-Counter Whitening
There are many over-the-counter whitening products available. However, they will not be as effective as a professional whitening treatment. Professional teeth whitening uses more powerful and effective whitening materials and products and is also designed to be safe for your teeth and smile. There are two types of professional whitening available: in-office whitening and take-home whitening. Our dentists will discuss your options and smile goals with you to determine which type of whitening is right for you.
In-Office Whitening
In-office teeth whitening can brighten and enhance your smile in as little as a single appointment. This type of whitening involves the use of a powerful whitening gel. This gel is applied to the surfaces of your teeth and then activated with a special light. It then breaks up stains and discolorations to lighten your teeth until they reach the desired shade of white. This process can usually be completed in under an hour.
Take-Home Whitening
Take-home whitening is both effective and convenient. When you receive this type of whitening, our dentists begin by taking impressions of your teeth, from which a custom whitening tray will be made. We will provide you with special whitening gel. You simply need to place the whitening gel into the trays and then wear them as directed. You can wear the trays at whatever time best fits your schedule, day or night, and over the course of several weeks you should see noticeable improvement in the appearance of your teeth.
